Photography lectures for camera clubs and interest groups

All lectures are shown as digital presentations and we ask that the club provide the digital projector and screen. Most lectures are also accompanied by display boards or other prints, books and photography equipment, so that people can take time to view a selection of images in printed format, or see how particular camera/lighting set-ups work.

Treescapes

Surrounded by trees, we often find them to be an integral element of our photography, and at times the primary subject. In this presentation, Ian explores trees in many forms—from wide landscapes and woodlands to intricate details, shapes, and patterns. The talk features both colour and black-and-white images.

'Just wanted to say many thanks again for such a great talk last night. Everyone seems inspired to go out and look at trees in a new way and actually look forward to foggy days.' - Potteries Photography Club

Black and White Photography

This lecture explores the world of black and white photography, examining a range of subjects and how the absence of colour can transform the way images are perceived. It also introduces how colours translate into greyscale tones and discusses the key considerations involved in creating effective black and white imagery.

Derbyshire and The Peak District

A selection of images covering the Peak District National Park and surrounding areas. This is an excellent mix of subjects, including landscapes, flora and fauna. Ian also takes time to discuss composition, the changing light and some of the technical considerations required to make his images.

Croatia's Cascading Lakes

Croatia's Plitvice Lakes National Park is an environment that takes your breath away at every turn. Located on the eastern side of Croatia, close to the Bosnian border, it offers the visitor a spectacular destination. The 16 interconnected lakes create numerous waterfalls, and the surrounding woodlands and hills provide plenty of opportunity to explore the national park.

Ian's lecture provides a great insight into the area, which is sure to wet your appetitie to consider a visit of your own. He provides travel and location information that will help the new visitor and shows some of the best locations to capture your images.

The Peak District in Black and White

Ian's love of Black and White photography is illustrated in this lecture that shows the Peak District in a new perspective.

'Thank you so much for your talk on Monday, members found it fascinating and were full of praise for the talk. A judge of meetings is whether or not members return after the break, and there was a full house!' - Rugeley and Armitage Camera Club

Being Freelance

As a freelance photographer, Ian discusses the wide variety of work that he undertakes. The approach to his work can just as easily be used by the ametuer photographer, which in many cases involves concentrating on the creation of the image and visualising the final product.

This lecture covers subjects such as studio lighting, portraits, motorcycles, landscapes, product photography and weddings.

'Your presentation was a real eye‑opener for all of us hobby photographers. The level of knowledge, professionalism and hard work required to actually make a living from photography is clearly a world apart from ours. Your meticulous approach to each project made for a highly informative and inspiring evening.' - Newark & District Photographic Society
